Computers have changed the way we live. This includes the way we educate our children. But while computers have become a tool to teach kids different lessons, it has its downside too. That is why it is important for parents to know how they can use the technology to their advantage and of course, to limit its use as well.
Common negative effects of computers to young kids
Your kids’ physical health might be in great danger
Too much computer use can also jeopardize your kids’ physical health. Without a doubt, they could spend hours in front of the computer. They can either play games, browse the internet, check their social media accounts, and just watch different videos from YouTube. With all of these, most of them don’t give time to do physical activities. They would rather play online games instead of running. And of course, living a sedentary lifestyle has never been good.
Their social behavior might be at stake
While social media is helpful for people living miles away from each other, it also has its negative effects too. You see, most young people today are also in social media. They spend much time with their online peers but in reality, it has lesser social involvement.
In addition, the online world has been rough these days. There are unsafe and unhealthy communities which our kids can easily join. This can also lead to cybercrimes and cyberbullying. If these things are not addressed properly, it can be a trigger for depression and even death.
How many minutes should your children use the computer?
- For infants – 15 minutes
- For toddlers – 30 minutes
- Elementary – 45 minutes
- Middle School – One hour
- High School – Two Hours
What’s the best solution?
Set a strict computer time
While computers and the internet can really cut the time for doing researches and homework, we strongly recommend that you limit the time of your kids’ computer use. Be vocal about it. Post it on the wall or have a serious talk about its effects. In addition, make it a point to supervise them when on a computer. If not, they will use it for recreation instead of finishing their school-related activities.
Another discovery that we’ve found is to use extensions that can automatically limit your kids’ screen time. To date, the most recommended ones are Play Timer, Goodnight Chrome, and Safe Lagoon.
Think of interesting offline activities
Of course, when you try to limit their screentime, it is also crucial that you promote fun offline activities for them. After all, you wouldn’t want them to practically do anything all day, would you? Here are some of the ideas that can help you:
- Board games
- Cleaning of the house (be creative so it will not feel like it’s a heavy chore)
- Scavenger hunt
There are so many activities to choose from. The best part is, you don’t really have to spend so much. Just use your creative juices and your kids will forget their computers.
