In the world we are living in, social media influencers are really making it big. Different brands are working with online ambassadors to promote their products. For most businesses, it’s a good move. But for specific industries, this has caused a number of issues. We are talking about medicines and other health-related products.
The Good Side
Let’s just be fair, using social media to promote health related products isn’t all that bad. It raises awareness and more often than not, the content of these ‘promotions’ seems to be informative and educational. However, other companies are abusing the powers of social media. Instead of helping more people, their intention is just to make more money. Yes, the business is growing but at the expense of other people’s health. With that said, we all need to be careful.
The issues of using social media influencers for medicines and other health products
They are not expert
What’s concerning is that big companies use social media influencers that are not even experts when it comes to medicines or health. They just choose people who are popular regardless of their niche. The more followers they have, the better. Again, that’s good for the business. But if someone will promote a product without even understanding what it is, what it does, and what are the effects, there can be a big trouble.
They are giving limited information
If a social media influencer isn’t an expert, it would be hard to provide detailed information about the product. They would follow a certain script or a list of things that they can claim. The thing is, when other people see this, they tend to believe that it works. That’s fine if you are just promoting clothes or bags. But if we are talking about health, it’s far more different. Remember, we have different health conditions. What works for others might not work for you.
What do you need to do?
Do your own research
If you think a product is interesting, it wouldn’t hurt if you conduct research. One social media influencer shouldn’t ‘influence’ your decision. Try to look for ingredients, see the reviews of actual users, and look for more resources.
Don’t use it right away
And of course, never use it right away. It is always best to consult your physician. They can provide you an expert advise which is evidently better than what you see on social media.
What could be the pitfall?
Perhaps it is clear now what could happen if you easily believe the health products promoted by social media influencers. It can definitely take a toll on your health. Worse – it could lead to death.
We all want to be healthy, and with all the health products, supplements, and other procedures promoted online, it can be overwhelming. But again, it wouldn’t hurt if you take time to understand what it can do, specifically for you.
Now is the time to be smarter with your choices, most especially if we are dealing with health – or life as a whole.
