Last Wednesday, it was confirmed by scientists that your cats will be better and even healthier once they stay indoors. According to them, cats who are allowed to go outside are three times more to get infected with parasites. As for pet owners, it is important to note that cats can transmit diseases to humans.
Surprising fact about cats living in tropical regions
Most of us think that cats living in tropical regions are exposed to more parasites. However, the study proved otherwise. The surprising discovery is that when a cat lives farther from the equator, the more chances of them to catch a virus when they go outdoors. But regardless of your location, it is suggested to keep your cats indoors to stay away from possible infections.
The team behind the discovery
The study was led by Kayleigh Chalkowski, a researcher at the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University. Their team carefully reviewed around two dozen studies which were conducted years before.
How do you take care of your cat
If you are a new cat owner, it is crucial that you know how to properly take care of it. If not, you are putting the cat’s health (and yours too) in jeopardy. In this part of the post, we will share with you some of the best practices and tips so you can ensure that your pet is healthy.
Make sure you are ready for the responsibility
Cats are generally independent by nature. But that doesn’t mean they can take care of themselves. If you will get a pet cat, make sure that you are ready for more responsibilities. Check if your house has a room or an area for the cat to stay. Are you ready for the added financial obligations? Are you ready to spend more money for grooming, vaccinations, litter box, toys, scratching posts, or for cat food? These are some of the things you need to consider before owning one. And don’t forget to check if you have allergies.
Know which type of cat food your pet needs
Remember that cat foods are not created equal. There are the dry ones, semi-moist, and canned types. You can test the waters and see which type your cat loves the most. Choose brands with a significant amount of fish, chicken, turkey, and beef. However, if your cat has a medical condition, it is better if you check with your veterinarian first. And remember, do not feed them human food as some of it can make cats sick.
Regularly check your cat’s skin
You need to always observe your cat’s skin. Do this while brushing. If you notice something odd, do not hesitate to take your cat to the veterinarian right away. Never ignore it to prevent further infection.
Brush their teeth
And don’t forget to brush your cat’s teeth. If you must know, they are also prone to dental disease. Make sure to use soft-bristled ones and never use human’s toothpaste.
