Aging is beautiful in a sense that we become wiser and smarter but it also has its obvious drawbacks. More than the apparent changes in the exterior of our bodies, we become more fragile and weaker. Our vision gets blurry, we can’t run as fast as we did, our back starts to hurt among many others.

While we can delay skin aging using facial creams or surgeries, that doesn’t go the same way when it comes to the more important aspect of our health. We definitely need something that will work from within. Yes, we have a lot of vitamins and supplements out in the market, but there is one plant that might do the trick.

Are you familiar with the Japanese Ashitaba? Let’s discuss it further.

What is Japanese Ashitaba?

Here are some quick facts about this anti-aging plant.

  • The name means tomorrow’s leaf.
  • It has a scientific name known as keiskei koidzumi.
  • A little bit bitter in taste.
  • Can grow to a height of approximately 120 centimeters.
  • A native of the Japanese Pacific region.
  • It is a rich source of DMC or flavonoid 4,4′- dimethoxychalcone, a compound known to slow down the aging process.

All about DMC

Researchers have studied the natural compound of DMC. It was found out that it can delay the deterioration of human cells. As for worms, flies, and yeast, they have observed that DMC can prolong their lives. It triggers a process known as autophagy or what they call a natural detoxification at a cellular level.

Close to 200 compounds were looked into and the experts carefully analyzed its anti-aging properties. Lo and behold, DMC stood out as the best when it comes to reducing ‘chronological age-related cell death’. The report also states that DMC can help in prolonging life across different species.

DMC is under the umbrella of flavonoids. Flavonoids, if you must know, is the largest group of phytonutrients in the plant kingdom. There are thousands of flavonoids usually found in fruits and vegetables and apparently, these have great health benefits.

Health benefits of Japanese Ashitaba

Apart from its anti-aging properties, this plant is also believed to be high in vitamin B12, vitamin C, iron, and calcium. Thus, Japanese Ashitaba is beneficial to the bones, kidneys, liver, blood, immune system, and hypertension among many others. Also, it is said to reduce the risk of heart ailments, brain disorders, and even cancer.  It’s not a surprise that samurai used to consume this even in ancient times.

How do you consume Japanese Ashitaba?

The good news is, the whole plant is edible. The yellow sap is said to have the strongest effect while the leaves can be easily boiled to make a tea.

Side effects of Japanese Ashitaba?

There are no reported side effects upon using Japanese Ashitaba. However, there are few people who experienced mild or slight stomach upset.

While natural plants are generally safe, it is always best to consult your doctor if you are to consume Japanese Ashitaba. Remember, our bodies are different and yours might react negatively. Just to be safe, and so as to not jeopardize your health, be cautious, do more research, and ask the experts if you can take it.
