Everyone knows that not getting enough sleep is detrimental to our health in so many different ways. But did you know that sleeping too much, or oversleeping, is also bad for health? Research has shown that the average amount of sleep a normal person aged 18-64 needs is about 7-9 hours of sleep. Oversleeping, therefore, would constitute a sleep time of more than 9 hours. Though there’s no definitive study to show whether oversleeping is the cause or effect of these medical problems, one thing’s for sure, oversleeping is not a good sign.


Medical Problems Linked to Oversleeping

1. Diabetes


Just like not getting enough sleep, studies have shown that oversleeping each night can increase the risk for diabetes. Too much sleep can cause your blood sugar levels to heighten. High blood glucose then increases your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

2. Obesity


Oversleeping or not getting enough sleep also has a negative effect on your weight. A recent study shows how people, over a six-year period, who slept for more than nine hours were 21% more likely to become obese than people who slept between seven to nine hours. Even factoring in food intake and exercise, there’s remains no change in the association between sleep and obesity.

3. Headaches


Head pain may occur for the people who are prone to headaches, if they sleep longer than usual, such as on a weekend or a vacation. This may be due to the effect oversleeping may have on some neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin. Too much daytime sleep and the lack of sleep at night may also cause people to suffer headaches in the morning.

4. Back pain


Lying in bed used to be a remedy doctors would prescribe for people suffering from back pain, but no longer. Regular exercise is also important, as some doctors believe that there are health benefits in maintaining a certain level of activity. But do check with your doctor to make sure what would be best for your back aches. Doctors also recommend against sleeping more than usual, when possible.

5. Depression


Whether it is depression that causes one to oversleep, as a form of escape from one’s problems, or that sleeping too much leads to depression, there is no doubt of the correlation between oversleeping and depression. Furthermore, it may become a vicious cycle, where the onset of depression is worsened by too much sleep. Thus, sleeping well is indispensable to recovering from depression.

6. Heart disease


A study involving about 72,000 women showed that those who slept more than nine hours a night were 38% more likely to develop coronary heart disease than women who kept to the average of seven – nine hours of sleep. However, as to the correlation between oversleeping and heart disease, no cause has been identified as of yet.


It has been observed through multiple studies that people who sleep nine or more hours a night have significantly higher death rates than those who sleep seven to eight hours a night. No specific reason for this connection has been determined, most likely due to a combination of the above-mentioned conditions. Researchers have also found that depression and low socioeconomic status are also associated with longer sleep, which could be linked to the noted increase in mortality for people who oversleep.
