It’s true that we’ve only been about a week into the new year. But changing the digits on our calendar doesn’t make a difference to the amount of stress we are shouldering.

Being stressed is a normal and common situation for most people, which is also the main reason why we often overlook our stress levels. If left unchecked, this built-up stress and pressure can leave you near your breaking point and make you unhappy, unproductive and underperforming. It’s time to take a chill pill and consider emptying up your plate if you’re experiencing the following 5 signs.
1. Hair loss

Under tremendous amounts of stress, it is possible to experience a higher amount of hair fall. Also known as telogen effluvium, your hair starts to shed prematurely due to stress. You’ll probably start noticing that your mane is thinning out and that the strands stuck in your comb increases.
2. Mood swings

Mood swings are no stranger to us girls, for most of us experience them at different intensities during that time of the month. However, if you’re not on your period, mood swings may be a sign of stress. Losing a grip on your emotions, and feeling like the entire world is against you may be a result of pent-up emotions and stress.
3. Frequent stomach pain, bloating or diarrhea

Even though these are not the typical symptoms we will associate with stress, studies have revealed that this is a form of your body’s fight-or-flight mode when you’re under too much stress. In addition, stress can slow down and disrupt digestion, causing discomfort.
4. Insomnia

Despite being physically drained, you lay in bed wide awake because your brain wouldn’t stop working. This is a definite sign of stress, and signals that you really need to slow down your lifestyle and allow yourself to relax. After effects of insomnia will ruin your day and make it even harder for you to fall asleep the next night.

Stress, fatigue and eye strain can cause persistent tension headaches which are disruptive to your work performances. Rather than relying on painkillers to solve the problem, it is highly advisable that you peel yourself away from work and let your body, mind and soul relax.
