There is no way around it: smoking harms your body in many ways.

1. Smoking can increase your chances of stroke

When you first take your first puff of a cigarette, the toxins in the smoke enters your body and your blood. It can cause your blood to thicken and increase in the formation of blood clot in your blood. Smoking also reduces the flow of oxygen to your organs because of the narrowing of the arteries.

All these can increase your chances of getting a stroke by 50%.

To add to that, smoking increases your chance of developing a bulge in the blood vessel of your brain which can burst or rupture causing brain damage and even death.

2. Smoking is bad for the heart

Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, and carbon monoxide is the culprit behind it. Carbon monoxide comes from the smoke and the nicotine of the cigarette.

It puts a strain on your heart, causing it to work faster. It also increases the blood clots in your blood stream. These can lead to the increased risk of developing problems such as heart attacks, heart diseases, and stroke. It can also damage your blood vessels and arteries.

3. Damages your lungs

This should be pretty common. When you smoke, you naturally inhale the smoke into your body and down to where your lung is, and it can affect your lungs badly.

Coughing, wheezing, and asthma is not the worse.

Smoking can cause you to develop a disease called the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). People who suffer from this disease have breathing difficulties due to the narrowing of the airway and the destruction of lung tissues.

4. Damages your stomach

People who smoke are also at risk of developing stomach ulcer and stomach cancer. This is because smoking weakens the muscle which controls the lower end of the gullet and allows acids to flow to the wrong side of your stomach,  causing a stomach reflux.

Smoking also increases your risk of developing kidney cancer.

5. Bad breath

The toxins in the smoke can cause unattractive problems such as bad breath and stained teeth, and can also cause gum disease and damage your sense of taste.

It seriously harms your appearance. Imagine having yellow teeth and bad breath.  People may shun from you, and that is never a good feeling. You might not even be able to kiss your lover!

You may also suffer from having your sense of taste being damaged. You might not be able to taste good food in the future fully.

The most serious damage that smoking can cause to your mouth is that you may have an increased risk of getting cancer in your mouth, lips, throat, voice box, and gullet.

6. It makes you look older

Yes, smoking can make you look older.

Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your skin. This means that if you smoke, your skin ages more quickly and looks grey and dull. Smoking also ages your skin by between 10 and 20 years, making it three times more likely of facial wrinkling, particularly around the eyes and mouth.

Bad news for all of us. I am sure all of us would want to look young as long as possible. Growing old is such a scary thing.

The toxins in your body can also cause cellulite. You know cellulite, it is the dimpling of the skin.

Smoking even gives you a sallow, yellow-grey complexion and hollow cheeks, which can cause you to look gaunt.

You will look tired and sick. The eye bags will start to show, and you will not look fresh at all. Is that what you really want to do to yourself?

This is bad when you want to start a big family in the future. Smoking can cause your fertility rate to drop.

7. Causes impotency

For a man, it can cause you to be impotent. The reason behind this is because smoking damages the blood vessel which supplies blood to the penis. Smoking also damages your sperm, decreases sperm count, and also cause testicular cancer.

8. Affects pregnancy chances

For women, it can reduce your chances of being pregnant. Studies show that women who smoke have a lesser chance of being fertile and conceived only in a year. It also increases your chances of getting cervical cancer because they are unable to get rid of HPV infections which can cause cancer.

There is also a higher risk of miscarriage if you smoke excessively.
