Are you looking into the mirror, feeling frustrated that your skin looks oily and no matter what you just cannot seem to find that blotting paper or wipes to control that overly oily look on your face? You are probably wondering why your skin is still so oily despite the efforts you take to reduce its appearance.

What causes oily skin?

First of all, oily skin is the overproduction of oil in your skin. This is also known as the production of sebum. Now, sebum production is meant to be good for your skin. It keeps your skin healthy and looking young. However, some people experience the overproduction of sebum, causing acne, whiteheads, blackheads, and skin spots to flare up.

Annoying, isn’t it?

Having an oily skin can be rather problematic. Your hair can get stuck in your face, your makeup can smudge easily, you look like you are sweating all the time, and well you pretty much look, oily.

So how do we get rid it?

1. Cleanse your skin

Cleansing your skin is one of the very important rituals that is essential when you want to get rid of oily skin. Cleansing your skin also helps to remove the impurities trapped in the pores of your skin.

But, do not over cleanse.

It is very tempting to want to wash your face often to get rid of that shine on your face. But do you know that over cleansing of your skin causes you skin to dry out? Having an over dry skin only causes your skin to over produce more sebum to overcome the dryness in your skin, and that can cause your skin to be oilier.

The maximum time you can wash your face is three times, nothing more than that.

2. Moisturise

After cleansing, make sure you moisturise your skin. Do not skip this step. I know it feels weird to have to moisturise your skin when you have oily skin.

“Why do I still need to slap on more moisture to my skin when it is already moisturised enough with the oil? Doesn’t it make even worse?”

You must not skip this step if you want to rid your face of that layer of oil. After cleansing, your skins will be rid of moisture, and if you do not moisturise your skin with moisturiser, your skin will be over dry and cause excess sebum production. Remember excess sebum causes oily skin?

If you are concerned about using more moisturiser that might make your skin even oilier, opt for a moisturiser that is light and not greasy.

3. Putting on clay masks

For extra control of your oily skin, use clay mask or mud mask. It can help a great deal in reducing oily skin as it tightens pores and refines them by cleaning the toxins and dirt in your pores to control the oiliness.

4. Wash your face with vinegar

“Wash my face with vinegar?!”

Using vinegar to wash your face is a good way to exfoliate and make your skin healthy as it balances out the hormones in our body which causes oily skin. Just take some vinegar and dip a cotton ball into it and gently massage your face.

Do not go and pour a whole bottle of vinegar on your face thinking it might help get rid of oily skin overnight though.

5. Lemon juice

Citrus fruit is a good way to reduce the oiliness in your skin. It can be used as a face wash to help reduce the oily skin in your face while also refreshing your skin at the same time. It’s a great way to rejuvenate, revitalise your skin and get rid of excess oil when applied to this skin.

Squeeze some juice out of the lemon and dip a cotton ball into it before massaging it onto your face. Let it sit for a while before rinsing it off with cool water. This will help treat oily skin.

6. Use salt

Another interesting ingredient that helps to control the oil in your skin, Salt is like a gift from the sea. It is a strong desiccant and removes oiliness and makes your skin dry.

Fill up a spray bottle with lukewarm water and add a tablespoon of salt to it. Stir it well and spray onto your skin. Try not to do this too often as salt can dry your skin which may increase sebum production.

Oily skin can be a hassle and hard to control. If you are feeling frustrated and have had it with your oily skin, try these methods to help you get rid of your oily skin. Maybe next time your hair would not be sticking to your face anymore.
