Last January 23, officials have placed Wuhan under lockdown to prevent the Coronavirus from spreading. But for the first time in almost 2 1/2 months, traffic is now allowed in and out of Wuhan.
The lockdown was lifted last April 8, 2020, and airports, highways, and railway stations are now open to the public. The taxis are now back on the road, and public transportation is slowly getting back on track. However, most restaurants and shops remain closed. Other companies are still on work-from-home status. The life in Wuhan is definitely far from what it was. But this is apparently a big step.
What’s Happening Inside Wuhan?
As expected, there are strick precautionary measures around the city. People are wearing hazmat suits, protective glasses, and masks. Those who are in Wuhan will have to show QR codes to prove that they are healthy.
Some of them had to leave for Shanghai to work. Those who will travel are required to have their IDs and to open their health code app. Only those with GREEN code can travel as this represents good health. Temperature is being monitored as well.
In most provinces, passengers are expected to have COVID-19 tests upon reaching their destination. If the results are good, they will need to quarantine themselves for another two weeks at home. For travelers to Beijing and Shenzen, they will need to be tested twice.
COVID-19 New Cases
On April 8, China reported that there are 62 new cases of COVID-19 infections and two new deaths.
Remember when the Chinese government mandated to block all travels in and out of Wuhan? A lot of people, even health experts, believed that it was uncalled for. Some of them see it as a violation of human rights and is an ineffective strategy to combat the virus. But a few weeks after that, other cities and countries had to do the same measures.
Why Quarantine is Important?
Let’s try to understand why the lockdown and social distancing can help in fighting off the virus.
First of all, we do not have to be scared when we hear the word ‘quarantine’, ‘lockdown’, or shelter in place. It can actually save your life. By doing so, you are drastically decreasing the chances of getting a direct contact from a person who’s already infected. Generally, a quarantine measure must be put in place during an outbreak, an epidemic, and a pandemic – and is not illegal.
Isolation is different because it is primarily used for people who are already sick and they are separated from those who are healthy.
What is Social Distancing?
Some are using the term ‘social distancing’ but are not following the right measures. In reality, you have to be at least two meters away from each other. Being a foot away isn’t considered effective and you might still get infected. Thus, you better follow this protocol.
It is good that Wuhan is showing us hope and that they are being strict even after the lockdown. It’s a great example that can be replicated by other countries, just in case they are to lift their mandate soon.
