But let us talk more about diabetes.
What is diabetes?
This is a serious health condition where the blood glucose is extremely high. There are two main types namely Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
What are the complications of diabetes?
If you don’t take care of yourself and you have diabetes, you might face a number of complications. It can damage your eyes, heart, feet, and even kidneys. However, with the right treatment and discipline, people with diabetes can actually live a normal life.
How to take care of yourself when you have diabetes
There are four main things that you have to do every day to keep yourself healthy, most especially if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
Always test your blood sugar
Yes, this should be included in your daily routine. You have to check your blood sugar using a small needle and blood testing strips. Luckily, you can have it at your home and just ask your doctor or educator how to use it.
Don’t forget your diabetes medicine
Forgetting your diabetes medicine is absolutely a big mistake. Don’t self-medicate though. What’s best is that you work with your doctor to get proper prescription. Similarly, clarify if there are special instructions. And when you are about to travel, make sure that it is included in your ‘what to bring’.
You have to eat the right food
It is advisable that you work with a professional such as a dietitian to plan your meals. This is to ensure that you will eat the right foods and the right amount. But generally, you have to stick with options that are low in fat, low in sugar, and low in salt. You must choose foods that are high in fiber. This includes grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans. Lastly, make it a habit to weigh yourself and see if you are still on the recommended weight range.
Ensure that you are physically active
Obviously, you have to stay active to live a healthy lifestyle. You can start with simple activities such as walking, swimming, biking, and dancing. Or if you want to learn something new, then perhaps choose sports to play. And don’t forget, gardening and cleaning are considered good activities too. However, we recommend that you seek your doctor’s approval before you engage yourself in anything.
