It’s nice to have a dip in the pool once in a while, most especially during summer or hot weather. And while it is the perfect excuse to flaunt your new bikini, staying in a pool with chlorine can have its drawbacks. Perhaps you’ve already noticed that it can affect your skin and hair. So, what do you have to do?

How do you protect your hair and skin while swimming?

Today must be your lucky day because we are going to share the…

Tips on how you can protect your skin and hair from the pool’s chlorine

But first, what can chlorine do to your hair? Chlorine is known as an oxidizing agent and can decrease your skin and hair’s natural oils and moisture. You might experience the following effects:

  • Dry hair
  • Uneven colored hair
  • Weak hair
  • Chipped nails
  • Fine lines
  • Dry skin
  • Burned skin
  • Acne

This is just a partial list and there is more to go. The point is, too much exposure to chlorine doesn’t help your health. So what do you have to do?

Always shower before and after you swim

It is highly recommended that you take a quick shower first before you go to the pool. Get soaked first if possible. This is so your skin and hair wouldn’t absorb too much water from the pool. And of course, don’t forget to take a shower after swimming. Do it as soon as possible and let the fresh water remove the chemicals now ‘attached’ on your skin and hair.

Use conditioner for your hair

A lot of people are doing this and it’s about time that you follow their lead. When you are about to dive into the pool, make sure that you apply conditioner onto your hair. This will serve as a protective layer and can even make your hair follicles stronger. Here are the brands that we recommend:

  • Verb Hydrating Conditioner
  • Bumble & Bumble Super Rich Conditioner
  • DevaCurl One Condition Original Daily Cream Conditioner
  • Living Proof No Frizz Conditioner
  • Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Conditioner

Or if you want, you can wear a swim cap that can add protection as well.

Never underestimate the power of skin lotion

Of course, let’s not forget your skin. Make sure that you put on lotion or sunscreen before going on a dip. Also, it would be best to get water-resistant sunscreens. But make sure you re-apply as necessary. And since we are talking about sunscreen, did you know that there are products specifically made for your lips? Don’t forget to apply lip balm too.

Prepare your apple cider vinegar for rinsing

We know that this tip might sound a bit weird but it works. You see, apple cider vinegar is known to get rid of all the chemicals from your hair.

Look for a well-ventilated pool

And lastly, it is important that the pool is well-ventilated to at least have the chemicals go into the air. In fact, we would recommend that you go to outdoor pools instead. These are much safer for your skin and hair.
