If you must know, dementia is considered one of the fastest growing health conditions around the globe. It’s a health issue that targets our memory and to date, there are more or less 50 million people affected worldwide. Each year, more and more people are diagnosed with this condition. In the next three decade, it is expected that the cases will increase by three times as well. This is according to the World Health Organization.

Currently, there is no treatment for dementia. What we can do however is to improve our lifestyle to cut the risk of having this disease.

How to cut down the risk of having dementia?

According to the new guidelines of the World Health Organization, there are five things you can do to lower the chances of having dementia.

Be physically active

Did you know that being active can do so much for our brain? Based on a study conducted 10 years ago, those who work out are less likely to experience a cognitive decline compared to those who spend most of their days sitting or practically doing nothing. Remember to be consistent and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week.

Be conscious with your diet

You probably know this already but we have to remind you again that your diet plays a huge role in your health. We already know what’s good and what’s not for our body, so it’s time to embrace and follow it. According to experts, a Mediterranean diet is recommended if you want to have optimum brain health. This diet is generally low in saturated fats and filled with omega – 3 fatty acids. It means, you have to eat fruits, vegetables, olive oil, nuts, and fish.

Stay away from smoking and drinking

How many times do we have to reiterate that smoking and excessive drinking will do you no good? Perhaps, this reason alone will make you stop from your vices. We know that stopping from a habit is easier said than done. However, if you are motivated and determined to live a better life, then you can stop it whenever you want to.

Vitamins and supplements are not highly recommended

If you must know, the brain vitamins and supplements which are widely advertised on different platforms are not backed up with strong scientific evidence.

Go out and live a healthy social life

Having alone time is good but isolating yourself more than you should might take a toll on your mental health. It can worsen the condition of people suffering from depression and anxiety.

If you stay away from people you love, it might cause sadness and it can speed up the process of having cognitive issues.  Maybe it’s about time to look for groups where you can join and learn new things. Or perhaps, give your old friends a call and set up a lunch date with them.

Of course, everyone is still wishing for a cure for dementia. However, that doesn’t mean you should easily bow down to the disease. Give it a good fight by staying fit and healthy.
