Google is now serious in infusing artificial intelligence to health care. In fact, its sister companies are investing a huge sum of money for this ambitious project. But if you must know, this isn’t the first time that Google tried its luck in the health care niche. They did so a decade ago but failed. They called it Google Health.

To date, there are hundreds of individuals who are working on the project. They try to partner with different companies in various industries.

Verily

One of the sister companies is already at its foot and one of the projects is a software that can already diagnose a cause of blindness known as diabetic retinopathy. This is being used in India. The company is also working on a surgical robot that can learn every time there is an operation or medical procedure.

google to invest in AI for health care

Verily’s chief medical and scientific officer, Jessica Mega, shared a very important insight. According to her, most of us believe in the idea of ‘you are healthy until you become sick‘. But that is not true. There is actually a sequence and if the algorithms can determine the early signs, then people can avoid getting ill. However, this is quite challenging because the medical data they have today might have gaps. The solution is to look for 10,000 volunteers to provide more data to the company.

The Volunteers

There are already volunteers wherein they get quarterly questionnaires. Aside from that, there is a piece of equipment under their mattress and it tracks the volunteers’ sleep patterns. A watch is also given to check the heart rate and to count their steps. But according to them, it isn’t accurate as it counts steps even if it does not have to.

The personal information will be sent to a database of a private corporation. Some of the volunteers were hesitant at first but decided to give it a shot.

Google in the health industry

Without a doubt, Google still needs to build credibility within the health care niche. And that is why they are hiring the best health professionals they could find.

Available health and fitness apps

In the meantime, you can enjoy a number of health and fitness apps that can help boost your health. We have here some of the most popular ones.

Beachbody on Demand

This is a great app that allows you to choose from different high-quality fitness classes. You can even check out meal plans and access to their cooking show.

MyFitnessPal

If you want to count your kcals, then this is a good app to use. This is essential most especially if you think you are eating the right food but still cannot achieve your desired results.

FIIT

This is also known as the Netflix of fitness apps. With that label alone, you can say that this is one of the best apps if you want to be more active and healthy.

Google might have a long way to go and a number of challenges to address like data accuracy and privacy issues. But the idea in itself is already a progress. Hopefully, they can create a successful AI project that can save and prolong lives.
