Eating too much junk foods is never a good thing. We all know this, right? It can lead to a number of health problems including obesity. Now, if your teens are regularly munching unhealthy chips and do not want to stop, there is a technique that you can use.

Scientists believe that there is a psychological trick perfect for this kind of dilemma. Could this be the solution?

A psychological trick to stop your kids from eating fast food

how to stop your kids from eating junk foods

The researchers at Chicago Booth University showed teenage boys few articles wherein it stated that fast food companies are trying to ‘hook their consumers on addictive junk food for financial gain’. During the three-month observation, the boys seemed to stay away from junk foods. In fact, the purchases of these unhealthy snacks decreased by 31%!

According to Christopher Byran, the author of the study, food marketing is designed in such a way that the viewers or its target market will feel happy. Thus, more people are lured to eat the food even if they already have the knowledge that it isn’t good for their health.

Teens, fast food chains, obesity

To date, obesity has become a literally big problem among teens and young adults. While the foods they eat are to blame, it isn’t the sole reason. Most teens today live a sedentary lifestyle. They would rather watch movies and TV series than to play sports outdoors. They would rather stay at home, spend hours scrolling through social media instead of going camping or hiking.

How can you help your teens?

There are actually multiple ways on how you can help your teens when it comes to avoiding junk foods and living healthy. Here are some of the most effective ones:

Educate them

It is important that you educate your teens. You have to show them numbers, data, and even studies to prove how bad it is to regularly consume ‘junk’ meals. Maybe on the first few days, they will try to avoid the idea of not eating fatty burgers and oily fries. But if you are just consistent about teaching them, it could work like magic.

Be the example

Don’t expect your teens to eat healthy foods if you can’t do it yourself. Be the example you would want them to follow. If you have time, prepare their snacks for school. This way, you are sure that they are eating good and healthy meals. You can also check what their school cafeteria offers. Ask your kids what are the food choices. If there are unhealthy chips available, you can work with the school administration to limit the food options to only healthy ones.

Teach them how to prepare their foods

Over the weekend, why don’t you cook healthy snacks or meals with your teens? You can prepare a delicious salad or baked sweet potato. Give them huge tasks! This usually works as teens love to be empowered. When they are used to seeing healthy food, it will be automatic that they will choose it over the unhealthy ones.
