If you are trying to eat healthy, you are probably cautious when it comes to your grocery shopping. You are most likely reading the labels, right? Perhaps, you choose foods and items which are organic, natural, or low in sugar. Speaking of sugar, did you know that a lot of food companies hide their sugar content? In that case, you might be eating more sugar than you should. How is it possible? Read on and find out…

How companies hide sugar from their customers

Adding more different types of sugar to their product

If you must know, the ingredients we see on food packages are listed according to their weight – having the main ingredient at the top of the list. What companies do is that they use different types of sugar, sometimes four so that the weight of the sugar will be divided and will look ‘lesser’. These sugars will appear last and the products will look healthier. Hence, you have to check your labels twice, or even more than that to be sure.

Using ‘healthy’ sugar

A number of companies would also trade sucrose to a ‘healthier’ form of sweetener. However, these sweeteners have very low amounts of nutrients and are still an added sugar to your diet. Have you seen labels like “no refined sugar” or “free from refined sugar”? It simply means, no white sugar is added.

Using a different name for sugar

are you eating more sugar?

Remember that sugar has different names and forms. Companies use it to conceal the sugar content of their products. You have to educate yourself on those names so you can avoid it. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • glucose
  • fructose
  • sucrose
  • barley malt
  • cane juice sugar
  • crystalline fructose
  • fruit juice concentrate
  • maltodextrin
  • evaporated cane juice
  • agave nectar

There is more to this list and you really have to watch out for it.

Making their products ‘healthy’

Making their products look healthy is a marketing strategy of companies. They will place diet, low-fat, light labels on the packaging. Of course, if you are health-conscious, you would check out these products first. However, what’s more important is to take time reading the ingredients at the back and considering the tips we have mentioned above.

What sugar can do to your body

If you still don’t care about the amount of sugar that goes to your body, then we will summarize it for you. And we are telling you, it isn’t good!

  • greater risk of depression to adults
  • cavities
  • worsens joint pains
  • risks of rheumatoid arthritis
  • ages skin faster
  • diabetes
  • heart diseases
  • kidney damage
  • excess weight
  • makes men impotent

We are not saying that you need to totally eliminate sugar in your life. Of course, you still deserve a slice of cake. What we just want to highlight is that you need to watch what you eat most especially that companies are doing techniques that hide sugar in their products.
