Recently, it was reported that Britney Spears checked into a mental facility as she was suffering from distress. It is believed that the cause is her father’s health.

In January, she announced that she will be cancelling all her concerts to spend more time with her family. If you must know, Britney’s father, Jamie, suffered from a ruptured colon late last year.

Just this Wednesday, the star posted in her IG account something that we should all embrace. “Fall in love with taking care of yourself, mind, body, spirit.”

According to reports, Spears will stay in the facility for a month and someone closed to her revealed that Jamie Spears is having a hard time after his second surgery that happened few weeks ago. Apparently, this has been rough for the singer as well.

For those who are not aware, Britney Spears and Jamie Spears are very close to each other. In fact, it was Jamie Spears who helped Britney when her career was at the lowest.

More about mental health

Mental health should be taken seriously. Come to think of it, if we are working out our bodies to look great, shouldn’t we do something that will improve what’s on the inside? Studies show that 2 out of 3 people will experience mental health issues in their life.

How do you help people with mental health problems?

If you know someone who is suffering from mental health problems, you should take note of the following to help them:

Talk to them

The first step to help a person experiencing a mental health issue is to have a conversation with them. It is important that when you do, you are focused. Make sure you are not distracted as you need to listen and observe everything. In addition, you shouldn’t force them to share things, most especially if they are not yet ready. Let them lead the conversation and allow them to share as much or as little according to their liking.

Never assume or provide your own diagnosis

If you are reading this post, you are most likely not an expert when it comes to mental health. Do not give your assumptions even if there are clear signs. Just be there and listen genuinely.

Invite them to live healthily

What you can also try is to invite them to have a healthier lifestyle. You can ask them if they want to join a running event. Perhaps, share a new healthy recipe. Do not get mad or feel bad if they decline you most of the time. The key here is to be patient. Who knows if one of these days they will say yes! That’s one step closer to recovery.

What if someone is suicidal?

If someone is giving clear signs that he or she might take their own life, do something about it – FAST! Observe them. Usually, when a person is suicidal, they do the following:

  • saying goodbye to their loved ones
  • posting clues on their social media accounts
  • giving their possessions to other people
  • hurting themselves

Or even if there are no signs but you strongly feel that there is a possibility for someone to attempt suicide, encourage them to get help. There are local institutions where they can call and ask for guidance. Similarly, tell their families what you have noticed so they can also take action.
