A lot of Filipinas are making names for themselves around the globe. The most recent was Catriona Gray who bagged the title Ms.Universe 2018. And there are still more who are standing out in different fields – from arts, to science and even sports. Without a doubt, Filipinas are the perfect example of beauty, grace, intelligence, endurance, and strength – the perfect mix of a hero. Marvel sees the same as they released the first Filipina superhero.

Last March 9, Greg Pak, a filmmaker and comic book writer, shared via twitter the amazing news! The Filipina superhero will be known as WAVE. This is perfect given that the country is an archipelago and surrounded by water. We can say that the character has an instant connection with the Filipino fans. According to reports, her tentative name is Pearl Pangan.

Wave was brought into life and co-created by a Filipino, Leinil Francis Yu, a comic book artist. The superhero will debut in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1.  She will appear together with other Asian superheroes from China, Aero and Sword Master, both are also newcomers. We will see Wave defending the continent from Malekith, a Thor villain. The first issue is set to be released in May.

Where is Wave from?

The character is described as a ‘mysterious new Filipino heroine’ and it was shared that Wave is from Cebu. Cebu is a province of the Philippines and is also the home of Lapu-Lapu -known as the first Filipino hero.

Observers also noticed Wave’s weapon and shared that she could be holding kampilans.  It is a double-pointed broad sword and according to history, the length of your blade signifies your rank as a warrior. The longer it is, the higher. Not surprisingly, this is the same weapon that Lapu-Lapu used on Ferdinand Magellan centuries ago. It could be that her ancestors have passed down the weapons and her outfit as well.

Apparently, the Filipino fans are already excited and Wave indeed created ‘waves’ in the online world. This was acknowledged by Greg Pak in a separate tweet.  Her superpowers are said to be water and tech-based.

What could be her superpowers?

Fans are already excited to know Wave’s superpowers. And while these things will be seen from the comics, others have already made their own assumptions and we can’t help but get even more excited! Her powers might include the following:

  • to move water and wave using her mind
  • animal telepathy that allows her to command creatures from the sea
  • speed underwater

Praises for Marvel and the new character

People all over the world are happy with Marvel’s direction of promoting equality through their different heroes. Who doesn’t know Black Panther and his representation of the black community? And let’s not forget the blockbuster hit, Captain Marvel which evidently showcases women empowerment.

This isn’t the first time that Marvel included Filipino heroes. In 2008, Triumph Division was introduced. They were a group of generational superheroes. They were headquartered in Manila but protected Southeast Asia.

One thing is for sure though. Marvel will gain more Filipino fans.
