Watching television for a long period of time isn’t recommended. We always hear this, we always see this, right? And the common reason we all know is that doing so is extremely bad for the eyes. Question is, is that all?
Apparently, not. Binge-watching has more serious effects on our health, some are even shocking!
If you are a self-confessed television addict, or if you know someone who is, then this post is for you.
What are the bad effects of watching too much television to our health?
Increases the risk of obesity
Imagine yourself on a weekend, wearing your favorite PJs, Netflix running, while you wait for your popcorn from the microwave. This might seem like a perfect scenario for those who just want to slack after a busy week, but if you do this on a regular basis, there’s going to be a huge effect on your health.
One, you don’t do physical activities (changing channels using a remote control is not included!). Two, most people who love watching television would rather eat foods that are easy to prepare. Examples are pizza, fries, popcorn, and soda. You try to combine a sedentary lifestyle with fatty fast foods and you are really on your way to obesity.
Now, if you cannot manage your weight, it can lead to more serious health conditions. Below are just few of the most common illnesses caused by being overweight or obese.
- high blood pressure
- type 2 diabetes
- gall bladder disease
- breathing problems
- body pain
There are still more and we can make a brand new post just for that! Can you imagine?
Affects mental health
People who spend hours and hours in front of the television are prone to having mental health issues. In fact, experts say that it can even worsen depression. While other people will contest that there are shows which are funny in nature, the activity itself hinders one from talking to real people who might help them with their condition.
As for children, exposing them to a lifestyle where television plays a huge role can also affect their behavior. If you are not too careful about filtering, or if you leave them unsupervised, they might see shows that are violent or even sexual. Their young minds process these things differently and such can manifest to their actions.
Bad sleep patterns
Let’s admit it. If a television show is great, it can be addicting. Instead of just turning the television off, you tend to finish the entire thing. We actually know people who would rather ditch sleeping because they want to finish the entire series. Well, obviously they cannot function properly at work. Some of them will resort to energy drinks, which of course, has its own drawbacks as well.
What should you do to change this habit?
First, you really have to be determined. All formed habits are hard to stop, but if you really want to change for the better, you will do it – whatever it takes. If you can’t make a drastic change yet, you can start small. Instead of watching six hours per day, trim it down to four, and then two, and so on.
Second, look for other activities that you will enjoy. Maybe you can work out. Or perhaps, find new hobbies like hiking or diving. The good thing about it is that you will live a healthier lifestyle and you also make friends.
And if you have kids, explain to them as early as now the effects of spending too much time on television. Make a strict rule when they can watch. We do not recommend to deprive them though, but instead, encourage them to watch moderately. In addition, you can ask them to do more physical activities. Why not set up a kiddie pool and let them enjoy? For sure, they will forget their favorite television show if you do that.
After reading this post, we hope that you are on your way to changing your lifestyle. Turn off your TV and do more activities that are productive and will not affect your health negatively.
