The most basic way to lose weight is to cut calories. But what happens if you consume less than 1000 calories a day? According to health institutes, a woman should never eat less than 1000 calories a day and a man should never eat less than 1200 calories a day.
Although restricting calories is a way to lose weight, eating too less of what you normally need can be really devastating for your health. In order to lose weight healthily, you still need to follow a healthy diet and exercise routine. Simply counting calories is not going to help in the long run and eating less than 1000 calories may lead to starvation and malnutrition which could cause serious health complications such as organ failure.
So what could really happen when we decide to consume less than 1000 calories?
1. You may gain weight instead of losing it
When you eat lesser calories, your body ends up craving for more food as it needs the energy to function. This could very well lead to starvation and starvation can create negative effects such as a sluggish metabolism, or slower fat burning process.
When the body is starved of energy, it clings on to every calorie consumed and began storing everything that is consumed. You may experience the opposite effect if your goal is to lose weight. And since your metabolism slows down, the next time you stop dieting, your weight will just click back real fast and your weight loss will be for nought.
Malnutrition occurs when you do not take in enough nutrients. In order to get enough nutrients, you need to take enough food for your body. By eating lesser calories, you are also taking in a lesser amount of nutrients.
The symptoms of malnutrition depend on the cause, but general symptoms include fatigue, dizziness and weight loss. Malnutrition can even lead to more serious health problems such as organ failure.
3. Sets you up for a binge fest
Prepare yourself for a binge fest. Do you know that many food cravings are caused by a deficiency in one or more nutrients and emotions? Eating fewer than 1000 calories will certainly cause your levels of key nutrients to dip too low, but you will also feel irritable, stressed, fatigued, and deprived which makes you start to crave food.
Which means you are up for a binge fest. You may be able to stop those food cravings for a while, but it will not be long before you start to eat everything in sight.
4. You may get side effects
Consuming less than 1000 calories can start to cause side effects such as cold hands and feet, constipation, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, and decreased muscle mass.
If an individual continues to consume less than 1000 calories over a long period, serious health problems can occur. Such are anaemia, renal failure, bowel obstruction, and nerve compression.
It is recommended to consume at least 1200 calories for women and 1800 calories for men. You should also follow a healthy exercise regime to lose weight safely, and healthily.
