Unbeknownst to many, playing video games actually has many health benefits. Health Loco cited several positive effects of video games for wellness, including developing problem-solving skills, relieving stress, and improving even eyesight.

But there’s actually more to video games than just providing benefits to health. In recent times, they’ve become important partners to bored commuters.

In a study presented by the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development in 2014, it was mentioned that around 59% of commuters in one of the busiest states in the U.S. use their smartphones while in transit. This means that gaming and doing other miscellaneous things on phones have become necessities for most commuters. The main reason for doing this, of course, is to kill time while waiting to get to your destination of choice. In some areas like India where cars crawl at under 5 kilometers per hour, mobile games are a lifesaver.

But playing mobile games while on transit isn’t only useful for killing time. According to Joseph Schwieterman, the director of DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, there are other benefits of mobile gaming, which include avoiding awkward conversations with strangers.

Playing mobile games while in transit is also good for the brain. In an article titled ‘The Positive Effects of Mobile Gaming’ by Medium mentioned that people who play games for half an hour a day gained positive benefits including memory formation, spatial navigation, strategic planning, and fine motor skills. All of the aforementioned areas positively affect the brain.

Whether you want to kill time, evade awkward conversations with strangers, or want to advance some levels in your favorite game, rest assured that you’re not the only one. Mobile gaming while in a public utility vehicle is quickly becoming popular since it can make the toughest of journeys fly by.

Mobile gaming has come a long way since Snake, which was popularized by Nokia. Today, mobile games are more immersive and interconnected thanks to on-board and the data connections that allow smartphone users to access the internet.

Mobile games allow people to switch off from the real world and escape into another one in order to wind down. Mobile games focus on just about every interest, one of which is pop culture trends within the film industry. No longer contained within the big screen, some commercially-licensed titles like Planet of the Apes, Wizard of Oz, and Ghostbusters now have mobile games of their own, all of which are simple to play in order to help people unwind. Mobile games are sometimes launched to promote upcoming movies that help build up hype and entertain their fanbase. Next year a rebooted version of Hellboy will be released and there is already a corresponding Hellboy game that is being hosted on the slot game provider Spin Genie. Hellboy’s parent company Dark Horse knows that by inking deals with gaming developers the awareness of the movie among fans will increase. Mobile games have titles that cater to both the old and young, and it’s thanks to the growing demands of the casual gamers on the go.

According to Statista, the time spent on mobile games per day is up by 461% in the last 6 years, from 46 minutes in 2011 to 258 minutes in 2017. In the US, mobile game usage led to $24.4 billion in revenue in 2014, and the figure is expected to skyrocket to over $44.2 billion in 2018.
