Some people believe that the type of food you eat can affect your skin. Recently, researchers have started to find scientific evidence that there is a possible link between diet and acne.
The type of food does affect your skin and believe it or not, some foods can cause you to develop acne. But at the same time, there are also foods that can help you to reduce breakouts on your skin. If you would like to try changing your eating habits for your skin, or you just want to reduce your acne to enjoy clearer skin, here are 5 foods you should avoid for people with acne prone skin.
What you should avoid
Studies have shown that some of the foods can make acne worse. And these are the culprits behind it.
Dairy has been one of the most commonly discussed culprits in for the cause of acne. A 2010 study found that there is indeed a connection between cows milk and acne. Acne itself is an inflammatory condition of the skin, and cow’s milk spikes blood sugar, which can increase inflammation, leading to pimples and acne.
Cows milk can cause inflammation, says Dr Joshua Zeichner, M.D, director of cosmetics and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Cow’s milk also increases insulin levels which encourage the production of sebum, a skin oil. Over production of sebum causes pimples and acne to form. Milk also contains growth hormones which encourage the overgrowth of skin cells. This means that our pores can be potentially blocked, leading to the formation of acne.
There is a study shown that sugar is linked to breakouts. Though you do not have to freak out yet. It does not mean that if you take a bite of a chocolate cookie or a slice of cake that you are going to get a pimple on your face. It all comes down to how much sugar you are taking in a day.
If you take in too much sugar, you are likely spiking your blood sugar levels. As mentioned, having a high blood sugar level can cause inflammation, and acne is an inflammation condition of the skin. If you have been taking too much sugar lately and notice some breakouts, you should consider cutting down some sugar in your diet.
3. High-glycemic foods
What are high-glycemic foods? Well, they are foods that can cause a spike in blood sugar and increase the amount of insulin in your body. Sugar is considered one of them.

These foods trigger insulin spike and an increase in blood sugar levels which can trigger hormonal fluctuations and inflammation, causing pimple breakouts.
Instead, try to choose low-glycemic foods such as vegetables.
4. High androgen foods
Foods like peanuts, peanut butter, corn oil, wheat germ, shellfish, and organ meats are high in androgens. They contain hormones that exacerbate acne. Best to stay away from foods that are high in androgens.
This can come across as a shock to cover lovers out there. A cup of coffee can save you from the exhaustion from your sleepless night and wake you up, but it can worsen a breakout too. There is an organic acid inside coffee beans that raises cortisol levels which are our major stress hormones.
If you have not noticed, when you are piled with stress, you may realise that you break out more than before. Cortisol can also act like an androgen simultaneously stimulating sebaceous glands and inflammation.
Do not forget, acne is an inflammatory skin condition. You can replace coffee with tea, or if you must have your daily dose of coffee, try not to get a large cup and try to reduce your coffee intake in a day.
