We often hear of our parents griping about their aching back or cracking knees. As we grow older, ailments inevitably do start to set in. Here, we explore various means of making the transition into old age an easier, more manageable, and altogether more enjoyable one. What you choose to start doing today can affect your health in the long run!
1. Eat more carrots
…and also almonds, fatty fish such as salmon, leafy greens, and egg yolk. We all know how carrots help with our eyesight because they contain beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A. But the path to good eyesight is not only paved with rabbit food. Although lesser known, these other foods can help to ensure our eyes’ smooth function as well. Studies show that leafy greens and egg yolks, packed with antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, can lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. A handful of almonds provides us with half a daily dose of vitamin E, which slows macular degeneration. Tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovies, and trout are rich in DHA, a fatty acid found in your retina low levels of which have been linked to dry eye syndrome.
2. Put on SPF
Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and cancer. Not only that, but this healthy habit goes a long way in making your older self look decades younger. A study conducted in Australia analysed a group of individuals told to use sunscreen daily versus another group that was not given any directives. People who used sunscreen were 24 percent less likely to show increased signs of aging.
3. Drink to yourself

And by that, we mean water. Make drinking water a healthy habit! Studies have found that increased water intake is linked to a decreased likelihood of bladder cancer, as peeing more frequently helps get rid of carcinogens building up in the bladder.
In addition, water helps to lower risks of coronary heart disease. Individuals who drank less than two glasses of water everyday showed elevated viscosity (blood thickness), volume of red blood cells (hematocrit), and fibrinogen (a protein involved in the clotting process) as compared to those who drank five or more. When elevated, these factors are associated with coronary heart disease. When blood is viscous, it flows at a slower rate through your blood vessels, which means an increased tendency for blood clots to form, and for cardiac and vascular trouble to happen.

4. Have a positive mindset
Studies show that fostering positive emotions can actually improve health and increase lifespan. Positive people reap the health benefits of lower blood pressure, less heart disease, better weight control and healthier blood sugar levels. They ultimately managed to live longer, the reason being they feel less stressed when faced with a difficult problem, simply choosing to get on and deal with it. Stress causes inflammation on the inside of our body, causing the body to age faster.
To develop a more positive mindset, you can start a gratitude journal, try to recognise positive traits about yourself, and be more grateful for what you have.
5. Get socialising
Make an effort to spend time with family and friends, for it will be beneficial in the long run. Studies have found that more socially isolated people have weaker immune systems, higher risks of heart attack, stroke, and depression. Lonely people have a 14 percent greater risk of dying than the average person.
