Renowned for its rich cultural heritage, Thailand is a country that has endless interesting things to do, especially when you are of the adventurous type. If you have never been to Thailand, here is a “beginner guide” to all the interesting things you can do and eat when you visit Thailand.
1. Eat Insects
I know most of you might think: “Why would I eat insects when I can enjoy another delicacy in Thailand?”
Forget about chips and welcome to Thailand! Apparently, eating insects is considered a norm for snacking, and it is a popular snack in Thailand. Some of them may look scary, and some are still alive. Yes, they do eat insects when it is still alive and crawling about.
However, do you know that insects are high in protein and contain the same level of protein as raw beef? Plus, these insects are cheaper than raw beef! It is a win-win situation. Hey, protein is good for your hair, nails, and muscles!
For those who are brave enough, ignore those scary looking claws and hard shells, and enjoy the crunchy savoury taste of insects. Who knows? You may never go back to chips anymore. Or, you may end up hugging the toilet bowl at the end of it.
2. Visit the Tubtim Shrine
Now this shrine is a little different from the others. This is a shrine that is surrounded by penises.
The shrine is known as the Tubtim Shrine AKA the penis shrine. This shrine is a fertility shrine that has a strong focus on the male’s phallus. Every direction you look, you are basically surrounded by penises. Small ones, big ones, wooden ones, stone ones, and coloured ones.
It is said that the shrine is to honour the goddess of fertility. It is believed that offering phallus objects to the goddess will grant them a baby, and thus, the whole forest is surrounded with penises, making it known as the penis shrine or the penis forest.
Location: The Tubtim Shrine is located on the grounds of the Swissotel Nai Lert Hotel, Chidlom-Ploenchit, Bangkok
3. Try street food
When you are visiting Thailand, you have to try the street food. It is a way to enjoy local foods without having to spend crazy amount of money. It is also cheap, which means more money for shopping right?
4. Visit the night markets
You have to add this to your bucket list if you have not. Night markets in Thailand offer carnival-like experiences. You can relive your childhood again! With bumper cars, Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, street foods, and cheap shopping. It is the easiest and the most enjoyable way to get close to the local culture while having fun at the same time.
5. Visit the Cabbage and Condom restaurant
Now, this is one restaurant that does not give out sweets or mints. Rather, it gives out free condoms. This is probably on the top list of one of the most bizarre places to visit in Thailand. This restaurant displays mannequins, lampshades and even Christmas trees covered in condoms. An interesting fact? It is located right beside a family planning clinic!
When you visit this restaurant, take a free condom home. Safe sex is always better. You prevent the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted disease. Better safe than sorry.
